The 1964 season had run it’s course with a 7 - team National League and a 13 - team Provincial League [Sunderland dropped out after only three matches]. For 1965 these two Leagues combined to form the first ever British League comprising 18 teams. Before the season got under way Middlesborough and Norwich withdrew, but Halifax joined the new League, and in the event all clubs survived the season and completed their fixtures.
