I’ve always been fascinated by the early FA Cup history – those Amateur teams with their quaint sounding names. The walkovers and travel problems wreaking havoc with the draws.
When I first bought Terry’s Premiership Football game on its release in 2002 I tossed aside the season that came with the game and created my own league with the first 20 FA cup entrants – ratings were easy to produce as they were all ‘touchy, feely’. It was an enjoyable project. I returned to Premiership Football earlier this year and decided to run a similar project. Half way through I decided to check out Terry’s FA Cup game and – with the help of Chat GPT managed to come up with 100 early amateur teams from the 1870s-1880s. In a few weeks I ran the two projects side by side and had a great time (Royal Engineers took the 19 team league and the Old Carthusians beat Maidenhead 4-1 in the cup final replay after drawing 2-2 in the first match.My original cup ratings had 20 teams in each division and 20 non league teams. I then began working on a 20 team premiership and 24 team Championship, 1st division and 2nd division and a host of Non League teams for further projects and, below, is the final product. Big thanks to Chat GPT for assisting me (although it was very frustrating at times – amazing how many errors and duplicates it was throwing up). So, we now have 92 league sides and 100 Non League sides!Although this is the ‘final’ product if you spot any errors I may have missed please let me know (you can contact me on the ‘Home of British Sports Replay’ Facebook page.
