The Australian side to tour England in 1977 was different to the one that had won the previous two ashes contests without Ian Chappell, Lillee, Gilmour, Turner and Mallett. For England it marked the triumphant return to test cricket after three years in cricket wilderness for Geoff Boycott. The imminent Packer World Series cricket circus meant that there were tensions. Greig was stood down as captain but retained. All the Australians except for Kim Hughes and Craig Serjeant would play WSC. This led to a highly acrimonious and disconnected team for the Australians. Thomson initially remained with the establishment for a year before being reunited with Lillee in WSC.
The series was notable for Boycott’s hundredth first class century in Leeds and also for the debut of one Ian T. Botham.
This was the last appearance for a number of players for the next two years as they played for World Series Cricket - the Packer ‘circus’. This created a massive schism in world cricket but spawned the modern professional ear for counties representational sides.
